UCONN Women’s Basketball – Online Strategy?

Posted by Team UT on December 21st, 2010   Interactive, Sports Marketing

Tonight at 7PM(EST) on ESPN2, the UCONN Women’s Basketball team will go for their record 89th straight win, besting the John Wooden-led UCLA Men’s team that put down 88 straight from 1971-74. The question we have is will their online strategy capitalize on the achievement?

The UCONN program is already on top of women’s college basketball, and is easily the team of the decade with six titles, but the all-time consecutive win mark no doubt raises the bar for exposure and squarely shines the spotlight on Head Coach Geno Auriemma and his Program.  What’s amazing is that in this online-oriented day and age they seemingly have no online strategy at all.

Like every school they have a templated section on the UCONN AD website, and they really go no further. There is an Official Facebook Fan Page, but even that is missing a Welcome tab, Players tab, Schedule tab, and possibly a special Win Streak feature tab. Coach Auriemma also has his own personal Facebook page, but when you go and search Twitter or YouTube for official Program accounts – you come up empty.

Now is a great opportunity for the UCONN Program to implement a strategy that includes a dedicated website and the full compliment of social media channels to better market to Fans, Students/Alumni, Corporate Partners, and most importanly: Recruits.

Holding the all-time consecutive win mark deserves more of a showcase than a simple press release on the templated AD website – that is for certain.
