“The Power 100″ Poll

Posted by Team UT on October 3rd, 2008   Sports Marketing, UnCommon News

The 2nd Annual BusinessWeek “Power 100″ poll ranking the most powerful people in sports is now out with Tiger Woods taking the top spot.

Couple notes on the rankings:

-UnCommon Thinking clients ranked: (1) Tiger Woods, (38) Dale Earnhardt Jr., (50) Danica Patrick. Note on David Beckham below.

-The poll looked only at “American” athletes, but BW also looked at the most influential people outside of the US, and David Beckham ranked No. 5 in that separate poll. The 2007 poll which did list non-US players had David at No. 17.

-Congratulations to Danica on being the 1st female (athlete or executive) listed. Three female executives were listed in the poll (74,75,78), but the only other athlete to make the list was Serena Williams at 100.

-In 2007, the list also included NASCAR drivers Jeff Gordon, and Tony Stewart, while this year’s list only includes Dale Jr. at (38).

-Michael Phelps off his Olympic performance was listed at No. 42, after not appearing in the 2007 list. Will be interesting to see if he can maintain the buzz (and power), and what strategy his team and corporate sponsors will implement.

-Where was Coach K. on the list? The standard for every college coach (in any sport) in America, and the Head Coach for the highest profile team in sports this year (US Men’s BBall). The list is really about influence in sports and to say he doesn’t rate out as being in the top-100 is completely incorrect.

-Where was Mark Steinberg on the list? As the agent to No. 1 on the list, you’d think common sense would have him also being in the top 100. Last year he ranked at No. 72 on the list.
