Things didn’t go as planned this wknd for the greatest LPGA player of all-time. With only her 10th missed cut on Tour in 303 events, Annika Sorenstam’s LPGA career came to an end on Friday at the ADT Championship. She’ll play competitively two more times this year (Lexus Cup – as the Captain of the International squad held Nov. 28-30; Dubail Ladies Masters held Dec. 11-14), but for an athlete that did so much in the US for the game of golf it’s a shame her Tour, Sponsors, and the media haven’t given her a better send-off.
Consider this: 89 Career Wins (72 on LPGA), 10 Major Wins, Career Grand Slam, World Golf Hall of Fame induction in 2003, Lowest score in a round of tournament play on LPGA Tour (59), Lowest scoring average for one season on the LPGA Tour (68.69), All-time Earnings Leader ($22.5 million), 8 Rolex Player of the Year awards, 6 Vare trophies for year’s lowest scoring average, 8 Golf Writers Assoc. of America Female Player of the Year awards, 2 European Player of the Year awards, 8 ESPY awards, 1993 WPGET Rookie of the Year, 1994 Rolex Rookie of the Year, 2003 Patty Berg Award for contributions to women’s golf, most points in Solheim Cup history and 22-11-4 record.
Oh and in 2003, she became the first female in more than 50 years to play in a PGA event, when she was invited to play in the Bank of America Colonial. She didn’t make the cut, but she gained a huge amount of fans and respect around the world.
The LPGA doesn’t have many stars, or for that matter players that make an impact around the world – they should at least post a tribute page in the same manner that the ATP did for Pete and Andre when they retired giving a full detailed look at her career. As for her main sponsors – Callaway, Lexus, Cutter & Buck – way to not even post a simple Congrats or Thanks or Best Wishes on your websites – true class you showcase.
She was is truly great Champion and game-changer, and we congratulate Annika on remarkable career.
