A little uproar over the new statue honoring Ernie Davis on the Syracuse campus because the sculptor, Bruno Lucchesi, put the swoosh on his shoes. Historically its not correct, so media and blog writers are thinking Nike must have done a deal. Not so says AD Daryl Gross – just a mistake and will be fixed.
Don’t see what the uproar is about, Ernie Davis was a two-time All-American and the first African-American to win the Heisman Trophy (1961). He was the greatest of his time, and Nike is the greatest sporting brand of our time. Historical correctness aside, I thought it was a nice touch to the statue.
Ernie Davis has an incredible story – tragically he would never play a down in the NFL after developing leukemia in 1962. He will have a big screen biopic opening on October 10th titled “The Express – The Ernie Davis Story”.
